Potty Training a Stubborn Boy

Let me just say potty training is the worst! And those of you who had perfectly easy children with 0 accidents I envy you. I have been attempting potty training on and off for over a year. Yes you read that right. And when it comes down to it the main thing I learned was that your child has to be ready and you have to be ready.

So Monday morning I decided I was ready and I felt my son was too. But most importantly I was ready. We have been living in a hotel that is very similar to an apartment over the past, almost, 2 months. This place has cement floors so I decided to use this to my advantage. Monday morning I took all his diapers away. I hid them and told him NO MORE! Keep in mind over the past year I have tried every potty training method there is. Naked, bribes, potty chairs, big celebrations. . The list goes on.

My mother got a pack of his favorite character underwear. In our case my little one is Obsessed with superhero’s and loves Spider-Man most of all. I told him that superhero’s use the potty and do not pee in their pants. I also told him not to pee on Spider-Man because that’s not nice!

I drink a ton of water myself so I simply took him to the potty each time I went and had him pee. He will usually go every time for me. I still always ask him a million times a day if he needs to go. Sometimes he says yes, sometimes no, and sometimes he just pulls his underwear off and heads towards the bathroom. A few random times he’s told me he had to go. When he does I make the most insanely huge deal. I clap, I high five, I hoop and holler and I let him pick out a sticker to put on a big poster board so he can see all the good jobs he has done! And when he poops on the potty I have a bucket of hot wheels that I let him pick one.

100% do not give in to diapers. Unless you or your little one is just not ready. I quit many times because I wasn’t ready. During nap time and at night I do use a pull up but I have explained he can’t pee in them and that they are sleeping underwear. They also have a character on them so again I tell him not to pee on chase or Marshall (paw patrol). He goes all night with out peeing. So we have had great success but it’s not perfect. The main thing is he is learning and I am not spending tons of money on diapers! Stickers are so much cheaper lol!

I hope some of these ideas work for you! Let me know in the comments and any questions you may have. And yes I still leave the house whenever I want. I’ve read methods where they don’t leave for days. I left day 1, twice! I took him to pee before we left and if I’m gone longer than an hour I take him in the store and then when we get home.
